Although Charles Dickens didn't live or stay here, he visited a friend who lived here, several times. She became the prototype of the character Betsy Trotwood in David Copperfield. The house is crammed with Dickens memorabilia and related items and the house repays lingering over. Staff are cheerful and helpful.
It’s a lovely old house displaying artefacts associated with Dickens and his and his family’s visits to Broadstairs. The building is beautifully well maintained. The exhibits are thoughtfully arranged in an interesting collection. The museum is run by friendly and smiling volunteers who offered us a quick introduction to the collection and were patient with our young children ;)
Interesting and pleasant little house with a small connection to Dickens. He did not live there. Keen and well-informed assistants. The entrance fee was a little steep, though. The museum appeared to be full of items with no real connection to Dickens- just of his time.
Jolly little museum with plenty of Victoriana and Dickens memorabilia to amuse and instruct. The displays give good insights into how the Victorians experienced the town. We particularly enjoyed the pics and maps showing Broadstairs as it used to be, and the collections of dolls and pictures of Dickens characters.
Only open Weds to Sunday in the afternoons. Lovely volunteers giving us insights into Dickens time in the House and Broadstairs. A wonderful view from the upstairs window. How I would love to have a desk to write in front of that window. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit.
Sorry to disagree, but this little museum just isn't very good. The curation and guidance is put together with all the precision and care of a drunk setting a table. While there are some (a few) interesting artefacts, they're assembled in a haphazard and juvenile manner. But much of the content is boring illustrations which you can find just as easily on Google. It's topped off by staff who are overly officious to the point of rudeness, making the whole experience tedious and tiresome. While it's inexpensive, it's not one I'd recommend to anyone other than the most ardent Dickens enthusiast. If you've ever been to a half decent museum, you'll be bored and possibly irritated at the lack of thought put into this place. The Dickens museum in London would do well to secure the few interesting items and let this place be put to bed.
A gentle stroll around this house, looking at a few artefacts from the Victorian era. Guide very knowledgeable. A shame there aren't a few more artefacts actually connected with Charles Dickens. Worth a visit but won't take long to look around the house.
Nice little museum, interesting.
The admission cost £4.
